Worst careers advice ever!
WHAT’S THE WORST CAREERS ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
FV1's Francesca Kamara put this question to people of different ages and backgrounds in an online survey. This was some of the responses:
‘Our entire class was encouraged to retake our exams or study to be a secretary, even the clever ones!’
‘I was encouraged to become a nurse, even though I didn’t want to!’
‘I was told that if the job doesn’t pay well there’s no point in doing it.’
‘I was told: “You’re a girl, try hairdressing.”’
‘I was told that my psychometric test results showed that I’d be an ideal prison warden!’
‘I was encouraged to just settle for anything.’
‘I was told that I wasn’t good enough for the career I wanted to go for.’
… AND THE BEST?
‘I was once told: “When you’re young take advantage of the fact that you have lots of time to try out a variety of things to see what you like. You’re not tied to one career for life.”’
‘I was told to follow my instincts.’
‘I was encouraged to set my goals and go for them!’
‘I was told: “Keep trying and don’t ever give up.”’
‘Someone once said to me: “Don’t wait for your goals to find you, go get them!’”
‘I was told to do lots of research and to shadow people in jobs that interest you.’
‘I was told that if I work hard for it, my career choice will be within reach.’
I was told: “Create your own dream job.’”
